HIRO Diapers

HIRO Diapers are the world’s first truly naturally degradable, high-performing diapers — soft on skin, tough on leaks, and powered by plastic-eating fungi to return to the Earth.

When I gave birth to my son, Hiro Happy, I was over the moon. But every diaper change came with a pang of guilt. I couldn’t stop thinking about the world I was leaving behind for him. Then Hiro—my Hiro—helped me discover something extraordinary: there are fungi that can actually eat plastic. That one tiny fact changed everything. That’s how HIRO Diapers was born—from my baby’s name and a wild belief that nature could help us clean up our mess.

Dear Parent,

When we set out to create the HIRO Diaper (pronounced ‘hero’), we started by taking everything unnecessary about regular diapers - the excess plastic, the harmful bleach, the toxic blue line - and swapped it for materials that are so soft and gentle yet still high-performing (preventing leaks and blowouts!) on your baby’s bum and beloved by our nature’s clean-up crew .

The result? A soft, powerful diaper that actually does what it says: keeps your baby dry and helps the Earth sigh with relief.

From End To End

Every HIRO diaper comes with a sidekick: the HIRO Pouch,
a cozy home for the friendly fungi.

Our diaper is separately accompanied by a special strain of fungi that have evolved to eat plastics. While the fungi are so safe and friendly (and even edible!) (but pls don’t eat them) they are not in the diaper at all.

They stay dormant until your baby adds a little stink. Then? Showtime. Toss the pouch in with the diaper and that’s it. Nature takes it from there,
with our vision to break it down.

Is it fair to all the beautiful babies that we’re punting all the waste to them? As we are aware of the plastic problem, it’s on all of us to help solve it for our children and for the ecosystem they will grow up in.

Sustainable. Low-effort. Very magical.
Straight arrow.

Each HIRO Pouch contains a proprietary blend of shelf stable SuperHIRO Fungi, that when discarded, can activate in a couple of weeks. HIRO’s vision is to break down soft plastics in under 12 months in landfills.

Step

Take soiled
diaper off baby

We designed the HIRO Diaper to be the least processed for the baby and also for the fungi to recognize it as food. Unbleached cotton, way less plastic (only where performance counts), NO toxic wetness indicator.

Step

Add the
HIRO Pouch

There are NO fungi in the diaper. Instead every HIRO Diaper comes with a sidekick: the HIRO Pouch, a cozy home for our friendly fungi. Just toss the pouch into the soiled diaper during changing time.

Step

Throw diaper
away like normal

No special throw-away steps, simply toss into the garbage and wait for our friendly fungi to wake up, and in a couple of weeks start working their magic. Saving the planet has never been easier.

Step

Friendly fungi
take it from here

When it ends up in a landfill, nature takes it from there, with our vision for the diaper to fully breakdown.
Sustainable. Low-effort. Very magical.

HIRO's True Vision: Nature-Led Innovation, Powered by Fungi

At HIRO, we believe the future of diapering lies not in replacing plastic at all costs, but in rethinking how we coexist with it: radically, responsibly, and regeneratively.

We’re building the best-performing diaper today by focusing on what truly matters: safety for babies, performance for parents, and the lowest possible impact on the planet.

But our vision goes deeper. We're building a system that brings nature into the loop.

Our proprietary end-of-life solution harnesses the only organisms on Earth proven to break down stubborn plastic polymers: fungi. These microbes don’t just "degrade" a diaper, they digest it, transforming waste into life.

FAQ

Why is unbleached better?

Unbleached cotton retains its natural waxes and oils, which makes it naturally hydrophobic and ultra-soft against baby’s skin. It skips harsh processing and showcases the true texture of nature—safer for baby, gentler on the planet.

Why no blue line?

We intentionally removed the wetness indicator (aka the blue line) because it contains Bromothymol Blue, a chemical we choose not to include. It was invented to drive consumption, not because parents asked for it. HIRO Diapers are free from this and other unnecessary additives. Read more in The Truth about Diapers.

Way less plastic? Do they still perform?

Yes. HIRO Diapers use less plastic without sacrificing performance. In third-party lab tests, our diapers matched or outperformed leading natural brands in absorbency, dryness, and speed—keeping babies dry for up to 12 hours, day or night.

Are the friendly fungi in the diaper?

Nope! While foodgrade safe, the SuperHIRO fungi only come into play after diaper disposal. You drop a HIRO Pouch into the soiled diaper—never in direct contact with baby—and that’s when the fungi get to work breaking down waste.

How do they reduce the risk of rash?

HIRO Diapers are hypoallergenic, dermatologist-tested, and made with super soft, breathable materials that keep baby’s skin dry and comfortable. They’re free from harsh chemicals, chlorine, bromothymol blue wetness indicator, fragrances, lotions, and dyes—all common irritants that can lead to diaper rash.

Are they totally chlorine free?

Yes. HIRO Diapers go beyond the industry standard and are made with absolutely no chlorine bleaching. Our cotton and pulp are processed using totally chlorine-free (TCF) and oxygen-based methods.

Is the fungi safe for my baby?

Yes. The fungi used in HIRO Pouches are organic, culinary-grade, non-GMO, and never come into contact with your baby. The pouch stays sealed inside the diaper until it’s discarded, where it activates safely in landfill conditions—not in your nursery.

How can fungi actually break down plastic?

Fungi are nature’s most powerful decomposers. Our proprietary MycoDigestible™ technology uses a blend of shelf-stable fungi that activate when exposed to moisture. These fungi release enzymes that break down plastic at a molecular level, transforming it into environmentally safe matter—no microplastics, no greenwashing.
